Best Builds & Team Compositions

Decision-first comps for Tier 1 Gold Stars, Endless pushes, and weird Relic carries — not a frozen tier list.

Last updated:

How Many Dudes? has 850,668 five-Type team compositions. A launch-week “best build” list ages fast; a decision process does not. Use these compositions as templates, then adapt to your Relic Pool, Trinkets, and Challenge Tier.

For Family bonuses see Synergies. For pool dilution see Relic Pool & Economy. For star farming see Metaprogression.

Build Philosophy

Every stable deep run answers four questions:

  1. Who deals damage? — clear elites and the G.O.A.T.
  2. Who holds aggro? — tanks or summons so the carry lives
  3. Who heals or Cheat Deaths? — Medic, Cleric, Vampire, or Relic-based saves
  4. How does the Relic Pool stay focused? — one or two Families until key Relics land

If a comp fails at round 104 after cruising, it usually lacked G.O.A.T. answers (burst survival + mobility + Ram clear), not “DPS numbers.”

Starter Comp — Medic / Paladin / Bard

Best for: first Gold Star attempts, learning economy, forgiving mistakes.

RoleTypeJob
HealMedic DudeTops the three most injured; cheap early stability
FrontPaladin DudeCover squishy HP; enables harder single-target waves
BuffBard DudeScales mid-game without demanding a full Family
FlexSamurai / SpartanDamage or wall
FlexFranken / ClericExtra sustain or burst

How to play it: Open Medic first. Take Paladin when offered as second roster pick. Greed economy harder than usual — fewer early Relics, save Dice for roster rerolls and the round-95 shop. Do not buy FrankenDude’s NomNomNom Relic before ~r95 unless you also have Necro support.

This line will not solo wave 123 Endless. Graduate once you can invest with Business Dude consistently.

Meta Core — Viking / Necro / Spartan / Cleric

Best for: Tier 1 G.O.A.T., deep Endless, community Gold Star farming.

RoleTypeJob
DPSViking DudePrimary clear
SummonsNecromancer DudeSkeleton bodies + aggro control
TankSpartan DudeFrontline wall
HealCleric DudeAoE sustain
FlexVampire / Zombie / MedicSustain or death scaling

Why it works: Necro skeletons pull aggro off your real Dudes. With Relics that grant summons Taunt, Vikings get time to delete high-HP targets while Cleric and Spartan keep the board alive. Prioritize Relics that boost attack speed, summon taunt, and healing amplification.

Avoid early: Bard and General — both need too many Relics before they contribute. Skip Ghost until you can keep him alive.

Undead Explosion — Zombie / Necro / Vampire

Best for: late-game scaling, synergy learners, meme-to-meta transitions.

Stack Undead Types so death events feed Zombie Attack. Necro recycles bodies; Vampire adds sustain. Keep the Relic Pool Undead-heavy so Type Relics appear often. Pair with one Warrior tank if early waves delete your glass.

The embedded video below walks a Zombie-focused run — remix it with Trinkets from the Trinkets guide.

Relic-First Carries

Official newbie advice: sometimes the Relic is the build. Commit the roster around one item:

RelicAnchor TypeIdea
River RaftExplorer DudeMovement / positioning carry
Fuzzy SocksElectrician DudeEnergy / Circuit package
Bear KnuckleDruid DudeNature scaling
BandoleerCowboy DudeAction rescue + damage
Shadowy FunnelWarlock DudeCrit-store AoE
Blood BagVampire DudeHealer identity lock

Use Ensemble Mode with one Pre-Posted Flyer to hunt the Relic, then fill flex slots.

Role-Bend Experiments

  • Medic as tank under General Dude positioning
  • Trooper healers with Medical License Trinket
  • Samurai + Alien + Taser one-Type spike
  • Ninja Thralls under Lich Dude for stealth + Crit

These shine in Daily Dude and Rematch labs before you stake a Main Run Gold Star on them.

Gold Star Farming Comps (Community)

Steam players farming remaining Gold Stars often reuse a Medic-first Warrior/Sci-Fi line:

  • Solid: Medic → Paladin → Samurai → General → Franken (ratios ~25% Paladin coverage for Relic aura math)
  • Fun: General + multi-Samurai + Medic swarm + Franken

Save Dice for roster rerolls and the late shop. Missing Relics before r95 is fine if economy is healthy — the shop after G.O.A.T. still drops stars.

What Not to Do

  • Force a “meta” five Types when the Flyer RNG offers a better Family focus
  • Skip healers until wave 20 “to save Gold,” then juice-bankrupt the run
  • Chase five Families on wave 1 for “options”
  • Copy Endless comps for your first Tier 1 clear — overkill complexity, same G.O.A.T. checks

Next Steps

  1. Clear Tier 1 G.O.A.T. with Medic/Paladin or Viking/Necro
  2. Read Challenge Tiers for star backfill
  3. Push Endless Mode only after economy habits stick
  4. Check Tier List for launch-week Type ratings — treat it as a hint, not scripture
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about How Many Dudes.

What is the best build right now?

For consistent Tier 1 clears in early August 2026, Viking + Necromancer + Spartan + Cleric is the most repeated community core. Beginners should start with Medic + Paladin until Business Dude economy clicks.

Do I need five specific Types every run?

No. Lock a two- or three-Type identity, then flex. Ensemble Mode is the place to test exact five-Type lists.

Is Bard ever good?

Yes as a mid-game flex once you can afford Relics. Avoid as an early pick when you still need a healer and a wall.

Which build for Endless wave 123?

Scaling cores with summons + heal + high DPS. Pure tank walls fail at that density. See the Endless Mode guide.

Will these comps survive balance patches?

Roles will. Exact Type rankings may shift after post-launch patches — check Updates and re-read Relic Pool rules before chasing a frozen list.
