Relic Pool & Economy

Control which Relics appear, then bank enough cash to buy the ones that matter.

Last updated:

Most failed runs in How Many Dudes? are not lost on the G.O.A.T. — they are lost twenty waves earlier when the shop never shows the Relic your build needs, or when you spent the bank before Business Dude could double it. This guide covers the two systems that decide consistency: Relic Pool construction and Dudeconomy.

Pair this page with Newbie Tips, Relics & Trinkets, and Builds once you understand the levers.

How the Relic Pool Works

Posting a Flyer does two jobs at once: it recruits a Dude Type, and it expands the Relic Pool. Butterscotch’s official rule:

  • Each Dude Type adds seven Type Relics to the pool
  • Each Dude Type also adds its Family’s eight Family Relics
  • A Relic enters the pool only once — duplicate Family memberships do not stack extra copies

Focused vs Diverse Rosters

Roster shapeType RelicsFamily RelicsPractical effect
Five Types, one Family358Type Relics appear often; Family pool stays small
Five Types, five Families35up to 40More tools overall; any single Type Relic is rarer

Early recruitment is a tradeoff between coverage and focus. If your carry needs one Relic (Blood Bag for Vampire healers, Bear Knuckle for Druid, Bandoleer for Cowboy), commit to fewer Families until that Relic lands. If you want flexible mid-run pivots, spread Families — accept slower hunting for specific Type Relics.

Pre-Posted Flyers Change the Odds

Pre-Posted Flyers lock Types before wave 1. They appear in:

Five pre-posted Flyers means the full Relic Pool is live immediately. That is excellent for variety and terrible for hunting one mandatory Relic. In Ensemble Mode, pre-post 1–2 Flyers when you need a key Relic early, then leave later slots open for adaptation.

Main Run grows the pool as you recruit. That slower growth is often an advantage for Relic-first builds.

Dudeconomy — Business Dude Compound Interest

How Many Dudes? looks like an autobattler. Late-game winners treat it like an investment sim.

Three times per run, Business Dude offers to invest your cash and return double later:

$1,000 → $2,000 → $4,000 → $8,000

if you keep reinvesting. The more you can hand over each visit, the bigger your late-game shop power. Butterscotch even added adaptive Relic icon shrinking because successful economy runs collect that many Relics.

Spend Windows

Use this decision frame rather than a fixed Gold number:

  1. Early (waves 1–15) — buy only Relics and consumables that prevent a wipe. Prefer Toughness, Max HP, Temporary Health, and Cheat Death over luxury DPS.
  2. Business Dude visits — if you can survive the next few waves without emptying the bank, invest. A weak mid-game with a huge bank beats a shiny early Relic that starves the snowball.
  3. Mid (waves 15–40) — once income is online, buy every Relic that fits the build. This is where focused pools pay off.
  4. Late (wave 40+ toward round 105) — spend aggressively before the G.O.A.T.; unused Gold does not help a wipe on round 104.

Dude Juice Discipline

Dude Juice revives KO’d Dudes but burns cash you need for Relics and investments. Many rounds are winnable while dragging unconscious Dudes — they recover after a few waves. Hold the Juice unless the next fight will cascade into a wipe. See Newbie Tips for official guidance.

Common Mistakes

  • Spreading five Families on wave 1, then wondering why your carry Relic never appears
  • Pre-posting five Ensemble Flyers when the build depends on one Relic
  • Spending every Gold before Business Dude arrives
  • Ignoring Smuggler Dude / Scavenger Dude events that can patch a thin pool mid-run — see Wandering Dudes
  • Buying Relics that dilute identity instead of reinforcing the Type you already committed to

Checklist Before Round 105

  • Primary Type Relics for your carry are online
  • At least one sustain path (heal, Temp HP, Cheat Death)
  • Mobility or chase tools for the G.O.A.T.
  • Trinket assigned to the Type that needs it most — Trinkets guide
  • Bank spent or invested with purpose, not hoarded into a wipe

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about How Many Dudes.

Does recruiting a second Dude from the same Family add more Family Relics?

No. Family Relics enter the pool once. Extra Types from that Family still add their seven Type Relics, but they share the same eight Family entries.

Should I always play single-Family?

No. Single-Family is best when you need consistent Type Relics. Multi-Family is better when you want broader tools and can win without one mandatory Relic.

How many Flyers should I pre-post in Ensemble Mode?

Pre-post one or two when hunting a key Relic. Pre-post more when your squad already works without a single-item dependency.

Is Business Dude always correct?

Invest when your squad can survive the next waves without the cash. If you are one Relic away from stabilizing, buy the Relic — a dead run earns zero compound interest.

What changed after the July 30, 2026 launch?

Pool rules and Business Dude remain the same. Launch added Trinkets and Wandering Dudes that can patch thin pools. Watch Updates for balance tweaks after v1.0.5-rc.7.
