Challenge Tiers Guide

G.O.A.T. prep, Tier 2/3 unlocks, star backfill, and Endless Mode after the final boss.

Last updated:

How Many Dudes? ships with three Challenge Tiers at full release. Tier 1 is the demo baseline; Tier 2 and Tier 3 unlock after beating the Tier 1 final boss — the G.O.A.T. on round 105. Each tier adds harder enemies, new final bosses, and metaprogression rewards including Ensemble Mode slot unlocks.

This guide explains how tiers work, why Butterscotch recommends jumping up early, and how Silver and Gold Star backfill lets you finish lower-tier collections without grinding Tier 1 forever.

Tier Overview

After defeating any final boss, Endless Mode continues the run so you can push past round 110+ for records.

The Tier 1 Milestone: G.O.A.T. on Round 105

Your first major goal is a Gold Star run that defeats the G.O.A.T. in Tier 1 at round 105. Official Butterscotch tips warn that the G.O.A.T. tests:

  • Burst survival — massive single hits that one-shot glass Dudes
  • Mobility — the boss zips across the arena; slow teams chase it into shock damage
  • Minion control — hundreds of Ram minions split your squad’s focus

Build checklist before round 105:

  1. Toughness, Max HP, or Temporary Health on frontliners (Knight, Spartan)
  2. At least one Cheat Death Relic or Trinket (Circuit Breaker, Bat Wings, etc.)
  3. Mobility or range so Dudes are not stuck chasing the boss
  4. Enough economy to buy pre-boss Relics — see Top 10 Newbie Tips

Don’t Fear Higher Tiers

Butterscotch’s official advice: you do not need to max Tier 1 before trying Tier 2 or Tier 3. Reasons to jump up early:

Quick Unlock Rewards

Tier 2 and Tier 3 can grant early metaprogression unlocks in one or two runs — starting cash, consumables, Pocket Dice tiers, or Ensemble slots — even if you do not clear the full tier immediately.

Star Backfill (Retroactive Stars)

Gold and Silver Stars for Relics and Trinkets earned in higher tiers backfill lower tiers. If you need three more Relic stars in Tier 1, earn them in Tier 2 instead — they cascade down and complete your Tier 1 collection without playing Tier 1 again.

This is the most efficient path to 100% collection according to the developer’s Top 10 Tips blog.

Skill Transfer

Tier 2 and Tier 3 introduce new constraints and boss mechanics that force stronger team-building. Lessons learned in harder tiers make finishing Tier 1 Gold Stars easier when you return.

What Changes Per Tier

Tier 1 (Demo Baseline)

  • Full demo roster scope with reworked Dudes in the July 2026 refresh
  • Act Bosses through round 105 G.O.A.T.
  • Trinkets preview in updated demo; full Trinket roster at 1.0 launch

Tier 2

  • New final boss with mechanics that test different weaknesses than the G.O.A.T.
  • Enhanced enemy scaling and additional enemy types
  • Faster path to Relic/Trinket stars via backfill

Tier 3

  • Hardest final boss — expect failed first attempts; watch patterns and rebuild
  • Maximum challenge for Gold Star completionists
  • Required for players chasing full Ensemble unlocks and endgame records

Endless Mode

After beating any tier’s final boss, Endless Mode keeps the run going. Community players regularly push round 110–120+ in Endless — see Tips for economy and positioning at high waves. Round 110+ introduces new boss modifiers (Serrated, Resilient) per the January 2026 demo patch notes.

Ensemble Mode and Tier Progress

Ensemble Mode slots unlock gradually via Silver and Gold Stars across tiers. You do not need every slot on day one — partial pre-select (1–3 Dudes) still helps Relic Pool hunting. See Ensemble Mode for partial Flyer strategy.

  1. Learn Tier 1 — reach round 50–80, understand economy and one family synergy
  2. First G.O.A.T. attempt — round 105 with tank + Cheat Death + mobility
  3. Sample Tier 2 — one or two runs for backfill stars and unlocks even if you lose
  4. Fill collection via backfill — finish Tier 1 Relic stars while playing Tier 2
  5. Tier 3 for completionists — chase full Gold Stars and Endless records

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about How Many Dudes.

The G.O.A.T. appears on round 105 in Tier 1. Beating it unlocks Tier 2 and contributes to Gold Star collection.

Do stars from Tier 2 count in Tier 1?

Yes. Gold and Silver Stars for Relics and Trinkets earned in higher tiers retroactively backfill lower tiers per official Butterscotch guidance.

Can I play Endless without beating every tier?

Endless Mode unlocks after defeating any final boss in any tier — you do not need to clear all three tiers first.

Should I max Tier 1 before Tier 2?

Not necessarily. The developer recommends trying higher tiers early for unlock rewards and star backfill efficiency.
