Metaprogression & Gold Stars

Stars, Pocket Dice, Ensemble unlocks, and efficient collection routes after launch.

Last updated:

Beating a single run is only half of How Many Dudes?. The long game is Collections: Silver and Gold Stars on Dudes, Relics, and Trinkets across Challenge Tiers, plus unlocks like Pocket Dice and Ensemble Mode slots. This guide explains how progression carries, how star backfill works, and how to finish a collection without burning out.

Stars — Silver, Gold, and Why They Matter

Stars improve permanent power and complete Collections. Your first major Tier 1 goal is a Gold Star from defeating the G.O.A.T. on round 105. Later tiers add harder final bosses and new star targets.

Community farming tip: you rarely finish every Gold Star in one run. Pick a five-Type Rematch or Ensemble squad aimed at the Types / Relics you still need, greed economy into the late shop, and keep going after the G.O.A.T. if shops can still drop missing pieces.

Star Backfill Across Tiers

Official newbie advice: Stars earned on higher tiers retroactively apply to lower tiers. If Tier 1 is almost done, a successful Tier 2 run can finish leftover Tier 1 Relic / Trinket stars while you earn new rewards.

That means you should not wait until Tier 1 is 100% complete before trying Tier 2. Dip up early for:

  • Fast early-tier unlock rewards
  • Backfill efficiency
  • Harder constraints that teach better habits for finishing Tier 1

Details and boss prep live in Challenge Tiers.

Pocket Dice

Pocket Dice are metaprogression tools unlocked through Collections. They give limited early-run RNG control — roster rerolls and late-shop leverage. Demo patches moved Dice into more visible shop restock rows; full release expands starting cash, consumables, and Dice availability.

Save Dice for:

  • Critical roster rerolls when your healer / tank still missing
  • The round-95 (and adjacent) shop when hunting last Relics for stars

Do not burn every Die on cosmetics of team composition in wave 5.

Ensemble Slot Unlocks

Ensemble Mode slots unlock gradually via Silver and Gold Stars. You do not need five slots filled to play — empty slots still randomize like Classic Mode. Prioritize unlocking enough slots to pre-post your core two Types, which is the sweet spot for Relic hunting.

Efficient Collection Route (Post-Launch)

  1. Learn the loopGetting Started + Newbie Tips
  2. First G.O.A.T. — forgiving Builds (Medic/Paladin or Viking/Necro)
  3. Star the easy Relics on Types you already understand
  4. Dip Tier 2 before Tier 1 is perfect — backfill leftovers
  5. Use Rematch / Ensemble to target stubborn Gold Stars (Samurai Relics, Franken pieces, etc.)
  6. Trinkets — assign boss rewards intentionally; stars on Trinkets also backfill
  7. Endless — optional prestige and practice after final bosses; not required for basic collection

Launch Unlocks Checklist

With the July 30, 2026 1.0 release, metaprogression also gates enjoyment of:

  • Full 42 Dude roster and reworks
  • Trinkets from Act Bosses
  • Wandering Food / Promoter / Smuggler events
  • Challenge Tiers 2–3 and Endless continuation

If you played the demo, update on Steam so Stars and Gold apply immediately.

Mindset

Collections reward curiosity more than repetition of one “meta” line. Butterscotch’s own advice: every Dude is strong when invested. Use metaprogression unlocks to test weird comps safely, not only to grind the same five Types forever.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about How Many Dudes.

Do Daily Dude stars count for my collection?

Yes. Stars and progression persist across Main Run, Daily Dude, Ensemble, Rematch, and related modes.

Should I finish all Tier 1 stars before Tier 2?

No. Higher-tier stars backfill lower tiers. Early Tier 2 dips are often the fastest way to finish Tier 1 leftovers.

What are Pocket Dice for?

Metaprogression RNG control — especially roster rerolls and late-shop relic hunting. Unlock them through Collections and spend them on high-impact moments.

Does mobile share progress with Steam?

Treat platforms as separate unless Butterscotch announces cross-save. Steam demo → Steam full game carryover is the confirmed path.

Is Endless required for completion?

No. Endless is optional after any final boss. Collections and Challenge Tier stars are the main completion track.
